Pierre Auguste Renoir

Pierre Auguste Renoir was a French Impressionist painter who was one of the most renown artists during the Impressionist movement. The Impressionist Movement was characterized by bright colors. Renoir was born in Limoges, France on February 25th, 1841. He was friends with other famous painters who played a role in the Impressionist Movement. In 1861, after he joined a studio of the Swiss painter Charles Gleyre, he met Claude Monet, Alfred Sisley, and Frédéric Bazille who he became friends with and who also lead the movement. In 1869, he and Monet spent some time sketching on the Seine River banks during which they formulated the famous technique and bright colors of the Impressionist Movement. Renoir was known for painting pretty children, flowers, pleasant scenes, and curvy women.

We chose Pierre as our legend because he was a great artist who was influential in the Impressionist Movement. He influenced many artists such as Pierre Bonnard, Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, and Maurice Denis. His combination of tradition and the modern aspect influenced them, the next generation of artists who collected his work. At an old age during the last 20 years of his life, even when suffering from debilitating rheumatoid arthritis he persevered and continued painting. He was a great artists with a keen eye for both intimate family life and the time’s fashion. He was essential for the development of the Impressionist style and technique lat in the 1860s. His works of happy families and well-dressed Parisian pleasure seekers built a bridge for Impressionism to a modern, middle-class art for the public. His influence, story, perseverance, and works of art captured our attention.
