Betty Boop

Our topic is Betty Boop, an iconic flapper girl character from the popular Talkartoon and Betty Boop film series. She has also been featured in comic strips. She was created by Max Fleischer and Grim Natwick. Betty Boop was originally based on a real person, Helen Kane (depicted below). She is also considered one of the largest sex symbols to date. However, even though Betty Boop has somewhat of a questionable sex scandal, we will be focusing more on her feministic qualities.

Helen Kane

We chose Betty Boop because she is an iconic character who supports feminism. To many individuals Betty Boop represents the 1920s (considering she is a flapper girl). As most people know women finally obtained the right to vote in 1919 which came directly before the 1920s. This movement sparked a major shift in the cutural norm for women. Most women began wearing what they liked. They wanted to feel sexy and wanted to feel as though they were allowed to dress that way. Betty Boop is the perfect reminder of this great time in history when women could finally express themselves.
