Course Description

Web I

This course introduces students to the Internet and World Wide Web. Students will study the history of the Internet, search engines, Web design process, Web hosting services, color theory, graphics, and Web publishing. Students learn how to develop Web sites using Hypertext Markup Language version 5 (HTML5) and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). Students learn to write code manually, use graphical user interface (GUI) authoring tools, insert optimized images, create hyperlinks, add tables, and create layouts for class portfolios.

Web II

In this course students continue to learn how to develop Web sites using Hypertext Markup Language version 5 (HTML5) and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). Students continue to learn and practice writing advanced code manually, use graphical user interface (GUI) authoring tools, create optimized images, create hyperlinks, add tables, forms, video, and audio to Web pages. Students also learn JavaScript and jQuery. Other topics include recognizing the importance of search engine optimization (SEO), color theory, typography, and implementing responsive web design (RWD). Throughout the course, students learn how Web sites are developed.

General Objectives

By the end of this course you will be able to:
  1. Utilize web authoring software efficiently and effectively
  2. Utilize graphic software efficiently and effectively
  3. Utilize modern development techniques in developing Websites
  4. Produce professional level Websites

Logistics

We will be following the attached digital learning schedule. All Assignments are posted on my Website at chagoyan.com and on Google Classroom. Synchronize video conferencing sessions will be accessible through Google Classroom. All assignments will be posted online and will be turned in online. Communication will be handled via district email.

Materials Needed

You will need the following for this course:

  1. A pen or pencil and paper for class notes or Google Docs (for typed notes)
  2. A teacher assigned File Transfer Protocol (FTP) account
  3. District issued Gmail account for Google Classroom, online learning platforms, and our local school network.
  4. District approved software – Visual Studio Code, Adobe Dreamweaver, Adobe Photoshop
  5. District issued MacBook Air

There are no textbooks for these classes. All material is learned via online live lecture, demonstrations, hands-on activities, and online resources.

Teacher Bio

I am a teacher, techie, father, and dancer. I love technology and problem solving. Prior to teaching, I did most of my development work for AT&T where I created intranet websites, applications, and databases. These days, I focus on teaching, spending time with family, and hitting the gym. I also dance salsa, bachata, cumbia, and merengue for fun. Well, I used to!

Class announcements will be posted on Google Classroom. You can get in touch with me via email. To expedite a response, when contacting me, you must provide the following in your subject line:

  • Period (1, 2,3, 4, 5, 6, or 7)
  • Class (WPD 1 or WPD 2)
  • Example: P5 - WPD 2

    I expect to get a lot of emails this school year. All emails not following the above subject line requirement will not be addressed. It may take up to 24 hours to receive a reply during the week and 48 hours on the weekend. Do not wait until the last minute to send a message for help.

    If you have a question about the course or an assignment, I encourage you to post your question in the Google Classroom “stream.” The stream is visible to the entire class community, so I encourage you to both ask and answer questions there. If a classmate asks a question and you know the answer, please jump in and help them out!

    Behavior Standards/Consequences

    The following class rules will be enforced:

    1. Pay attention to the teacher - No talking while the teacher is talking
    2. Raise your hand for assistance – Raise virtual hand and be patient
    3. Work quietly - Collaboration is encouraged in your online groups
    4. Take care of computer equipment - Do not change computer settings

    Students are expected to sign in to live sessions on time and follow school and class rules. Internet game playing and unauthorized Web surfing will lead to you falling behind. Be careful. It is easy to get lost.

    Grading Policy

    Units of the course will be graded based on the following criteria:

    1. Assignments
    2. Participation (Activities)
    3. Quizzes
    4. Tests
    5. Projects
    6. Professionalism

    Points are given for the above criteria and are calculated based on points earned to total possible points. You are allowed to resubmit work for an improved grade. Assignments include all platforms such as Edpuzzle, Flipgrid, Listenwise, Imago, etc.

    Assignment Policy

    You will be assigned graphic and coding assignments, as well as videos to watch on your own. All assignments will be posted on Google Classroom and on my Website – chagoyan.com.

    Work will be submitted via Google Classroom and/or by posting it on your own Website (online portfolio). You will be responsible for maintaining your online portfolio. An assignment will be considered turned-in when it is posted on your online portfolio AND submitted on Google Classroom. Assignments not on your online portfolio will not be graded.
