In the original Lion King book series, the first book, "A Tale of Two Brothers,", recounts that Scar was originally called Taka. He grew jealous of his older brother, who was chosen to become king, and constantly sought his father's approval. Taka grew up thinking that Mufasa was better liked by their dad, and so one day when their father cancelled their hunting trip, Taka set an angry buffalo named Boma on his brother. The other buffalo in the herd attacked Taka, giving him his scar. When their father attempted to talk to Taka and explain why his kingly duties come first, Taka insisted that he from then on be referred to as "Scar." He spent the rest of his adolescent and adult life plotting to dethrone his royal brother.
